Surface transportation providers moved more than $790 billion worth of cargo across the U.S., Canadian and Mexican borders in 2005, an increase of 11 percent and a new record, according to data collected by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
Crossborder freight totaled 679 million tons for the year.
Trucks accounted for more than 62 percent of shipments, or $491 billion, up 14.3 percent compared with the previous 2004 record. Railroads moved 15 percent, up 24 percent to $116 billion, up 23.9 percent. Maritime carriers and pipelines each moved seven percent and air carriers four percent.
The value of freight moving between the three countries in the past five years grew at an average annual rate of nearly four percent. The value of freight moving between the United States and Mexico, and United States and Canada increased annually by 3.3 percent and 4.2 percent.
