Hellenic Shpg 23/2/14 - N/S Supply/demand: Europe-Mid East-Indian Subcont
India’s imports from Europe remained disappointing in 4Q13, leaving ocean carriers with exacerbated empty container equipment repositioning costs from the Middle East.   Eastbound   Cargo shipped from Europe to the Middle East and Indian Subcontinent (MEISC) continued falling in 4Q13, reaching a monthly average of just 245,000 teu, 3% below the previous quarter. The Middle East’s traffic fell by 2%, to 161,000 teu, whilst the Indian Subcontinent’s (ISC) fell by a more alarming 5.8%, down to 84,000 teu (see Figure 1).   It is the low season due in part to

Hellenic Shpg 23/2/14 - Where will the 'shipping super cities' of the future be located?
Listening to shipping research guru Martin Stopford explain what he sees as the future of major shipping cities on Wednesday was always going to give a lot of food for thought. To make it just that a bit more interesting Stopford was being quizzed onstage by the new chief executive of the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) Andrew Tan, a man who clearly has a vested interest in the topic.   Clarksons Research Services president Stopford made a clear distinction between what he sees as cargo port cities such as Rotterdam and Shanghai, which are driven their role serving

THE Shanghai Containerised Freight Index (SCFI) shows a spot rate decline on the Shanghai-north Europe route of US$146 in single week to $1,233 per TEU with the Shanghai-Med run falling $150 to $1,264 per TEU. Transpacific spot rates also fell $96 to the US west coast to $1,945 per FEU and by $69 to the east coast to $3,294 per FEU. Container Trades Statistics figures show that last year, February was the weakest month on the Asia-Europe trade, but this year's rates are still ahead of last year's. Not so for transpacific spot rates, which are lower than last year when Shanghai

JOC 24/2/14 - Reefer Shippers Stress Over Slower Ship Speeds, Fewer Port Calls
Following a frenetic decade of ups and downs in volumes and rates, the steamship industry is seeking stability through alliances and cost-cutting that has lengthened voyage transit times. While many shippers don’t see much of a problem in slow-steaming, exporters of refrigerated goods have more reason to be concerned.   In the proposed P3 Network among Maersk Line, CMA CGM and Mediterranean Shipping Co., ships moving from Asia to the U.S. will get a speed boost to 19.9 knots. The three carriers plan to offset the eastbound increase in fuel by using less on return trips to Asia. U

Shpg Gazette 20/2/14 - Part of Cathay Pacific fleet parked due to overcapacity and weak demand
PART of Cathay Pacific Airways' freighter fleet is expected to remain grounded as overcapacity and lack of demand dogs the air cargo market.   Hong Kong's leading airline took five of its 26 freighters out of service last year. It also agreed to sell six Boeing 747-400 freighters to Boeing, with the aircraft departing from the fleet between now and 2016, reported the South China Morning Post.   The airline's cargo volumes declined by 1.4 per cent year on year in January, following a 5 per cent drop in December. Cathay recorded volume growth in only two of the

JOC 24/2/14 - Asian Air Hubs See Solid Growth
Asia's leading air freight hubs have gotten off to an encouraging start to the year, posting healthy growth rates across the board in January.   Last year Asia-Pacific airports saw only a 0.9 percent increase in tonnage, according to data from Airports Council International. But demand picked up toward the end of the year, and the latest figures suggest key lanes also saw expansion last month.   South Korea's Incheon International Airport, Asia's third largest by tonnage last year after Hong Kong International Airport and Shanghai Pudong, handled 198,000 tons

JOC 20/2/14 - Executive Order Shines Spotlight on US Trade Automation

Aboard Air Force One and on his way to Toluca, Mexico, to meet with his Mexican and Canadian counterparts, Obama yesterday signed an order requiring the International Trade Data System to be finished by December 2016. The system, often referred to as the “single window,” will all

Shpg Gazette 25/2/14 - TPP blockage: Japan wants its farmers protected, the US, its automakers
MAJOR stumbling blocks to the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) are Japan's wish to protect its farmers and the American desire to protect its automakers, reports Reuters. The US wants Tokyo to scrap tariffs on rice, beef and pork, dairy products, wheat and sugar - 586 product lines - while Japan wants Washington to set a schedule for ending tariffs on cars and light trucks. And neither wants to budge. Smaller countries face intense domestic opposition to the entire free trade concept. Malaysia faces opposition to the TPP both its political opposition and powerful elements w
