JOC 30/8/07
The Trans-Atlantic Conference Agreement on Thursday announced an eastbound tariff rate restoration, effective Oct. 1.
For eastbound dry van and temperature-controlled containers moving from and via Atlantic Coast ports: $240 per 20-foot and $300 per 40- and 45-foot container. All other freight is charged at $15 by weight and measure.
For traffic from and via Gulf and Pacific Coast ports: $400 per 20- and $500 per 40- and 45-foot container. All other freight is charged at $25.
The group in a notice to the trade said that "current rate levels are still failing to provide sustainable returns commensurate with services provided." It said overall volumes in the westbound trade under-performed in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2006, while eastbound volumes continue to improve.
"The current demand for eastbound space is rising; vessel utilization remains high and is expected to continue throughout 2007. In this prevailing eastbound economic climateŠthere is scope for a rate adjustment to bring levels in line with market conditions."
